EM-366A-SBL Brushless DC-Motor Driver with Positioning and Modbus

EM-366A-SBL is a high-power brushless DC motor driver with Hall sensor feedback. It features an efficient MOSFET power stage, true 4-quadrant operation and regenerative braking capability. The driver supports 120° commutation and meets modern EMC requirements, making it suitable for demanding industrial and OEM motion applications.

Brushless Positioning With Hall Sensors

EM-366A-SBL uses the motor’s Hall sensor pulses not only for commutation, but also for position feedback in a servo-like way. The positioning resolution depends on the number of motor pole pairs: a 1 pole-pair motor produces 6 positions per revolution, while a 7 pole-pair motor gives 42 positions per revolution. Because the pulses are counted from the motor shaft, adding a gearbox can significantly increase mechanical resolution.

The driver includes its own positioning amplifier, allowing the dynamics and accuracy of the system to be tuned via parameters (ramps, braking behaviour, dead zone, etc.). A 31-bit position counter provides a very large usable range and fine position resolution.

Control and Interfaces

EM-366A-SBL offers all essential interfaces for modern automation:

  • Digital inputs for reset/homing, disable, local/bus selection and safety stop
  • Analog input for position set (0–5 V, scalable up to 0–10 V)
  • PNP fault output for fault indication
  • RS-485 Modbus RTU for full bus control and parameter access

The unit can be used either as a locally controlled actuator (switches and analog signals) or as a fully bus-controlled positioning driver in a Modbus network. Several input and output ports and functions are parameter configurable, which makes the unit flexible in different system architectures.

Protections and Diagnostics

EM-366A-SBL integrates overvoltage, undervoltage and overtemperature protections. These fault conditions are indicated by an onboard LED and can also be monitored via the Modbus interface. Current limiting and I-trip functions protect both the motor and the driver during overload situations. Current limit faults can be reset via the reset input, a reset timer or by setting the analog speed/position reference to zero.

The true 4-quadrant power stage enables regenerative braking. During braking, the supply voltage rises and can be controlled with a braking resistor connected to the brake output. In battery-supplied systems, the braking energy can be returned back to the battery so that an external braking resistor may not be needed.

Parameter Setting and Commissioning

Parameters can be set digitally with the EM-236 interface unit or with Emen-Tool Lite running on a PC via the EM-328 adapter cable. All parameters are stored in non-volatile memory. Through the same interface, motor current and RPM can be monitored for commissioning and diagnostics. Parameter setting and monitoring are also available over the RS-485 Modbus bus.

The device is designed for DIN-rail installation and can be used with various enclosure options in control cabinets and OEM systems.

Typical Applications

  • High-power valve and damper actuators
  • Heavy-duty linear actuators and positioning mechanisms
  • Industrial machines requiring servo-like motion with high current
  • Automation doors, covers, hatches and indexing mechanisms
  • OEM motion modules with Modbus control and high torque demand
