Overview

EM-366A-SBL is a high-power positioning driver for brushless DC motors with Hall-sensor feedback. It combines an efficient MOSFET power stage with true four-quadrant operation and regenerative braking capability.

The driver supports 120° commutation and uses the motor's Hall signals for both commutation and position feedback. This enables servo-like positioning without requiring a separate position encoder.

The EM-366A-SBL can operate as a locally controlled actuator or as a remotely controlled positioning system in an RS-485 Modbus RTU network. Its high current capacity makes it suitable for demanding industrial and OEM motion-control applications.

Positioning With Hall Sensors

The EM-366A-SBL uses Hall-sensor transitions as incremental position-feedback pulses. The internal positioning controller counts these pulses and drives the motor toward the commanded position.

The available positioning resolution depends on the number of motor pole pairs. A motor with one pole pair generates six detectable Hall positions per motor revolution, while a motor with seven pole pairs provides 42 positions per revolution.

When a gearbox is used, the mechanical output resolution increases according to the gear ratio. This allows accurate positioning even when the motor itself provides a relatively small number of Hall transitions per revolution.

Position Counter

The driver includes a 31-bit position counter, providing a movement range of approximately 2.147 billion count values. This allows long travel distances and high gear ratios to be used without quickly reaching the position-counter limit.

A defined reference or homing point is required to establish a known physical position when using incremental Hall-sensor feedback.

Motion Adjustment

The internal positioning controller provides detailed adjustment of motion dynamics, braking behaviour, start and stop ramps, positioning dead zone and accuracy.

Motor current, speed and positioning behaviour can be adapted to the mechanics of the application. Several input and output functions are parameter-configurable, allowing the driver to be used in different system architectures.

Local and Bus Control

Digital inputs are available for reset or homing, disable, local/bus selection and safety-stop functions. The analog position-reference input supports a 0–5 V signal and can be scaled for input ranges up to 0–10 V.

The RS-485 interface uses the Modbus RTU protocol and supports remote position control, parameter setting and status monitoring.

Four-Quadrant Operation

The true four-quadrant power stage supports motoring and controlled braking in both directions. This provides active deceleration and accurate control during direction changes.

When the motor generates energy during braking, the energy is returned to the DC supply. In a battery-powered system, it can be absorbed by the battery. In other supply systems, excess energy can be dissipated through an external braking resistor controlled by the brake output.

Current Limiting and Protection

The adjustable current limit protects the motor and power stage under overload conditions. The current limit can be set between 1 A and 60 A in 1 A steps.

Current-trip protection can stop the motor when an overload persists. Depending on the configured operating mode, a current-limit fault can be reset using the reset input, a reset timer or by reducing the analog speed or position reference to zero.

Fault Protection and Diagnostics

Built-in protection functions include overvoltage, undervoltage and overtemperature shutdown. Fault conditions are indicated by an on-board LED and can also be monitored through the Modbus interface.

The PNP fault output can be used to forward fault information to an external controller or other equipment.

Configuration and Commissioning

Parameters can be configured using the EM-236 Interface Unit or with the EmenTool Lite PC application and EM-328 adapter cable. All parameter settings are stored in non-volatile memory.

Motor current, rotational speed, position and diagnostic information can be monitored through the same configuration interface. Parameter setting and monitoring are also available remotely through the RS-485 Modbus interface.

Cooling

The driver includes an NPN fan-control output that can control a compatible external cooling fan. The output becomes active when the driver temperature reaches 55 °C and can supply a maximum current of 100 mA.

Installation and Applications

The driver is designed for DIN-rail installation and can also be used with different enclosure options in control cabinets and OEM systems.

Typical applications include high-power valve and damper actuators, heavy-duty linear actuators, industrial machinery requiring servo-like motion, automated doors and hatches, mechanical indexing systems, and OEM motion modules requiring high torque and Modbus control.
