EM-352-SBL Brushless Positioning Driver with Modbus

EM-352-SBL is a compact brushless DC motor driver with Hall sensor feedback and an integrated positioning servo. It combines a high-efficiency MOSFET power stage, true 4-quadrant operation with regenerative braking, and RS-485 Modbus communication into one DIN-rail mountable module.

Brushless Positioning With Hall Sensors

EM-352-SBL uses the motor’s Hall sensor pulses not only for commutation, but also for position feedback – similar to a servo system. The controller counts the Hall pulses with a high-resolution position counter and drives the motor to the commanded position using an internal servo amplifier.

The positioning resolution depends on the number of motor pole pairs. For example, a 1 pole-pair motor gives 6 positions per revolution, while a 7 pole-pair motor gives 42 positions per revolution. Since these pulses are counted from the motor shaft, a gearbox can be used to significantly improve the mechanical resolution.

Control and Interfaces

The driver provides all essential control inputs for automation use:

  • Digital inputs for reset/homing, disable, local/bus selection and safety stop
  • Analog input for position set (0–5 V, scalable up to 0–10 V)
  • PNP fault output for fault indication
  • RS-485 Modbus RTU for remote control and parameter setting

EM-352-SBL can be used either as a locally controlled actuator (switches and analog signals) or as a fully bus-controlled positioning driver in a Modbus network. Some inputs and outputs are configurable via parameters, allowing flexible use in different applications.

Protection and Diagnostics

The driver includes overvoltage, undervoltage and overtemperature protection. Fault situations are indicated by the on-board LED and can be monitored via the Modbus interface. Current limiting and I-trip functions protect the motor and power stage under overload conditions. Current limit faults can be reset with the reset input, via a reset timer or by setting the analog speed/position reference to zero.

Regenerative braking is supported by the true 4-quadrant power stage. During braking the supply voltage rises, and this can be managed either with a braking resistor output or, in battery-supplied systems, by feeding the braking energy back to the battery.

Parameter Setting and Commissioning

Parameters can be set digitally with the EM-236 interface unit or with the Emen-Tool Lite PC software via the EM-328 adapter cable. All parameters are stored in non-volatile memory. Through the same interface, motor current and RPM can be monitored for commissioning and diagnostics. Parameter setting and monitoring are also possible via the RS-485 bus, enabling full remote configuration.

The device is designed for DIN-rail mounting, and different enclosure options are available for integration into control cabinets and OEM equipment.

Typical Applications

  • Valve and damper actuators
  • Linear actuators and positioning mechanisms
  • Small servo-like drives in machines and automation systems
  • Gates, covers and flaps requiring accurate end-position control
  • Compact OEM motion modules with Modbus control
