Overview

EM-241-SAF is a high-current positioning driver for brushed DC motors. Its solid-state power stage uses efficient MOSFET technology, providing a long service life compared with electromechanical relay-based control solutions.

Position control and feedback are based on analog signals. The position command can be provided as a voltage or current signal, while the feedback can be supplied as a voltage signal or by an external feedback potentiometer.

The maximum positioning accuracy is 0.2%, making the driver suitable for a wide range of actuator positioning applications requiring accurate control and high motor current.

Position Control and Feedback

The position command can be supplied as a 0–5 V, 0–10 V or 0–20 mA analog signal. Position feedback can be provided as a 0–5 V or 0–10 V voltage signal.

Potentiometer feedback is also supported. The driver provides 0 V and 5.5 V auxiliary outputs for supplying the external feedback potentiometer.

Motion Adjustment

The movement range can be restricted at both ends using software limit parameters. Motor speed and current limits can be configured separately for the forward and reverse directions.

Additional parameters include load compensation, positioning dead zone, acceleration and deceleration ramps, and a braking zone. These adjustments support smooth direction changes and accurate approach to the requested position.

High-Current Motor Control

The power stage can provide up to 40 A of continuous motor current and 60 A momentarily when operating at the lower PWM frequency. At the higher PWM frequency, the corresponding current capacities are 25 A continuous and 40 A momentary.

The adjustable current limit ranges from 1 A to 100 A. During the start ramp, the selected current limit is increased by 50% for up to one second, with a maximum start current of 150 A.

Selectable PWM Frequency

The driver supports 2 kHz and 16 kHz PWM frequencies. The 2 kHz setting provides the highest available output-current capacity.

The 16 kHz setting moves the switching frequency above the normal audible range, providing quieter motor operation with reduced continuous and momentary-current capacity.

Configuration and Monitoring

Parameters and operating status can be configured and monitored using the EM-236 Interface Unit. Parameter settings can also be copied easily from one driver to other driver units.

An on-board LED indicates fault conditions using blinking codes.

Configurable Indication Functions

Fault information can be forwarded to other driver cards through the configurable indication connection. Alternatively, the output can provide a position-reached indication or an analog voltage signal representing the current position.

Fan and Brake Outputs

The driver includes a fan-control output that becomes active when the temperature exceeds 50 °C. The NPN open-collector fan output can switch loads up to 40 V and 1 A.

A separate NPN open-collector brake output is provided for controlling an external electromagnetic brake. The brake output is rated for loads up to 60 V and 5 A.

Installation and Environmental Performance

The driver accepts motor and supply cables with a cross-sectional area of up to 16 mm². Signal connectors accept cables up to 1 mm².

The EM-241-SAF has a wide operating temperature range and has been CE tested for industrial EMC environments. Several enclosure options are available for the driver card.
