EM-170 is a compact four-quadrant motor controller designed for small brushed DC motors. It provides variable-speed operation in both directions together with active motor braking.
The power stage operates using pulse-width modulation at 16 kHz, providing efficient and quiet motor control. Motor output is commanded using a 0–10 V analog signal.
Motor-voltage feedback compensates for changes in the supply voltage, helping to maintain the commanded motor-voltage level when the supply voltage varies.
The EM-170 supports motoring and braking in both rotational directions. This allows the controller to accelerate, reverse and actively decelerate the motor without external direction relays.
Four-quadrant operation is particularly useful in applications requiring frequent direction changes, controlled stopping or accurate movement between two operating positions.
Motor output is controlled using a 0–10 V analog command signal. The analog input has an impedance of 100 kΩ.
A regulated 10 V auxiliary output is available as the reference voltage for an external speed potentiometer. The auxiliary output can supply a maximum current of 5 mA.
The controller measures the motor output voltage and compensates for variations in the supply voltage. This helps keep the average motor-voltage command stable when the supply voltage changes.
The function is based on motor-voltage feedback rather than direct rotational-speed measurement. Actual motor speed can therefore still vary as the mechanical load changes.
Selectable acceleration and deceleration ramps provide smooth motor starts and stops. Available ramp times range from immediate response up to 1.5 seconds.
The deceleration ramp can be bypassed when rapid braking is required. This allows the same controller to provide either a smooth stop or a faster active stop according to the selected control command.
The independently activated Speed 2 function provides an alternative preset motor speed. It can be used as an approach speed, positioning speed or other application-specific secondary speed.
This is particularly useful in positioning applications where rapid movement is required across most of the travel but a lower speed is preferred near the target position.
The motor-current limit can be selected using DIP switches. Sixteen settings are available between 0.2 A and 2 A.
Current limiting can be used to protect the motor and controller and to restrict the maximum motor torque applied to the mechanism.
The digital control inputs use positive PNP logic. An input voltage between 4 V and 30 V is interpreted as active, while a voltage between 0 V and 1 V is interpreted as inactive.
The digital control inputs have an impedance of 10 kΩ.
The EM-170 has been EMC tested for industrial environments according to EN 50081 and EN 50082-2.
The EM-170 is suitable for small conveyors, feeders, valve actuators, positioning mechanisms, laboratory equipment and other low-power DC motor applications requiring reversible speed control and active braking.
