EM-175 is a speed controller for brushed DC motors. It regulates the motor voltage, making it suitable for use with both regulated and unregulated DC power supplies.
Motor speed can be commanded using an external potentiometer or a direct analog voltage signal. Adjustable RxI load compensation helps reduce motor-speed variation caused by changes in mechanical load.
The controller includes an adjustable current limit, acceleration ramp, two dynamic-braking modes, regenerative braking and a priority freewheel function. It can be optimized for either 12 V or 24 V motor applications.
The motor-speed command can be provided using an external potentiometer or a direct analog voltage signal. The control-voltage range can be adjusted between 0–5 V and 0–10 V.
A regulated 5 V auxiliary output is available as the reference voltage for an external speed potentiometer. The auxiliary output can supply a maximum current of 10 mA.
Motor-voltage regulation compensates for variations in the supply voltage, helping to maintain a stable commanded motor-voltage level.
Adjustable RxI compensation increases the motor voltage as motor current rises. This helps compensate for the voltage drop caused by motor winding resistance and reduces speed loss when mechanical load increases.
The adjustable current limit protects the motor, power stage and mechanical system if the motor stalls or the mechanism becomes jammed.
The current limit can be adjusted internally from 0 A to 15 A or controlled externally using a 0–5 V signal, where the full input range corresponds to a current-limit range of 0–15 A.
The adjustable acceleration ramp gradually increases the motor voltage during start-up. This provides a smoother start and reduces sudden mechanical and electrical loading.
The ramp time can be adjusted from immediate response up to three seconds.
The brake input can be used to stop the motor rapidly using dynamic braking. Two different braking behaviours can be selected.
In the first mode, even a short brake command resets the speed command and acceleration-ramp state. When braking is released, the motor therefore starts again from zero output and follows the complete acceleration ramp.
In the second mode, the internal ramp value decreases during braking according to the selected ramp time. When braking is released, the motor resumes operation from the remaining ramp value.
In compatible battery-powered systems, the controller can return braking energy to the battery. Regenerative braking activates automatically when the generated motor voltage exceeds the commanded motor-voltage level, for example when the speed command is reduced rapidly.
The battery and wiring must be able to accept the returned braking current without allowing the supply voltage to exceed the controller's permitted voltage range.
The freewheel input disconnects active motor control and allows the motor to rotate freely without electrical driving or braking torque from the controller.
Freewheel has the highest control priority and overrides all other commands while it is active.
The controller can be optimized for either 12 V or 24 V motor applications. In the 12 V setting, the motor-voltage range is 0–15 V. In the 24 V setting, the range is 0–29 V.
The EM-175 is suitable for conveyors, feeders, pumps, fans, winding equipment and other brushed DC motor applications requiring adjustable speed, controlled acceleration, rapid braking and torque limitation.
