Overview

EM-T50 is a wirewound power resistor designed for use as a braking resistor in DC motor-control applications. During motor deceleration, regenerated electrical energy can be directed to the resistor and converted into heat.

The resistor is available in two resistance values. The EM-T50-2R2-80W version has a resistance of 2.2 Ω and is recommended for 12–24 V systems. The EM-T50-4R7-80W version has a resistance of 4.7 Ω and is recommended for 24–48 V systems.

Regenerative Braking

When a motor decelerates or is driven by its mechanical load, it can operate as a generator and return electrical energy to the motor controller’s DC supply. A braking resistor provides a controlled path for dissipating this regenerated energy.

The EM-T50 is intended for connection to a compatible motor controller or braking-load controller equipped with a braking-resistor output. The controller determines when the resistor is connected to the DC bus.

Available Versions

EM-T50-2R2-80W

The 2.2 Ω version is recommended for 12–24 V systems. Its lower resistance provides greater braking current and braking power at a given voltage.

EM-T50-4R7-80W

The 4.7 Ω version is recommended for 24–48 V systems. Its higher resistance limits braking current in higher-voltage applications.

Nominal and Peak Power

The nominal power rating is 80 W. The resistor can also withstand a specified peak power of 500 W for up to 5 seconds, making it suitable for intermittent motor-braking applications.

The permissible repetition rate depends on the energy of each braking event, the mounting method, airflow, ambient temperature and the time available for cooling between braking cycles.

Resistor Selection

Braking-resistor current and instantaneous power can be estimated using the following equations:

I = U / R

P = U² / R

The selected resistor must remain within the minimum resistance, maximum current and energy limits specified for the connected motor controller or braking-load unit.

Installation

The resistor can become very hot during braking. It must be mounted on a suitable heat-resistant surface with adequate ventilation and sufficient clearance from wiring, plastic components and combustible materials.

Cable lugs are included with the resistor.
