Overview

EM-356C is a compact brushless DC motor driver with hall sensor feedback and an efficient MOSFET power stage, designed for 120° commutation. The true 4-quadrant power stage enables regenerative braking: during braking the supply voltage rises and can be controlled with a braking resistor, or in battery-powered systems the energy can be fed back to the battery, eliminating the need for a resistor.

The device includes basic digital command inputs such as direction, start/stop, disable and speed-2 activation, as well as analog inputs for speed and current control. Fault status is indicated by an on-board LED and a PNP indication output. Several input and output functions can be customized via parameters.

Speed Control Modes

The EM-356C supports two speed control modes:

  • Open loop (direct control): motor voltage is proportional to the control voltage, similar to a standard DC motor.
  • Closed loop: hall sensor feedback is used for accurate speed regulation.

Start and stop ramps operate in both modes. Speed range, closed-loop RPM range and ramp times are parameter adjustable. The analog inputs are filtered, allowing the use of a PWM signal to control both speed and current.

Modbus Communication (Optional)

As an option, the EM-356C can be equipped with an RS-485 interface supporting the Modbus protocol, enabling external control, parameter setting and monitoring from a host system or PLC.

Parameter Setting and Monitoring

Settings can be configured digitally using the EM-236 interface unit or the Emen-Tool Lite PC software together with the EM-328 adapter cable. All parameters are stored in non-volatile memory, and the interface allows monitoring of motor current and RPM.

Installation

The device can be mounted on a DIN-rail base, and several enclosure options are available. A version with a cooling fan is also available for higher continuous current capability.
