EM-356C is a compact brushless DC motor driver with Hall sensor feedback and an efficient MOSFET power stage. The driver is designed for motors using 120° Hall commutation.
A true 4-quadrant power stage enables regenerative braking. During braking, the supply voltage rises and can be controlled using a braking resistor. In battery-powered systems, the regenerated energy can be returned to the battery, eliminating the need for a braking resistor.
The EM-356C includes digital command inputs for direction, start/stop, disable, and speed-2 activation. Analog inputs are provided for speed and current-limit control.
A PNP indication output provides external fault signalling. Fault conditions are also indicated by an on-board LED. Several input and output functions can be modified using parameters.
The true 4-quadrant power stage allows controlled operation and braking in both directions. When the motor decelerates, mechanical energy is converted back into electrical energy.
A suitable braking resistor can be connected to limit the resulting rise in supply voltage. When the driver is powered from a rechargeable battery, the regenerated energy can be returned to the battery.
The EM-356C provides two selectable speed control modes:
Adjustable start and stop ramps operate in both speed control modes. The speed range, closed-loop RPM range, and ramp times can be configured using parameters.
The analog inputs can be used for both speed and current-limit control. The speed input range can be selected from 0–5 V up to 0–10 V.
The analog inputs include a 100 Hz filter, allowing PWM signals to be used for speed and current-limit control.
The motor current limit can be set from 1 to 40 A in 1 A steps. An external 0–5 V analog signal can also be used for current-limit control, with 0–5 V corresponding to 0–40 A.
The driver includes protection against overvoltage, undervoltage, and overtemperature. Overvoltage shutdown occurs at 60 V, and overtemperature shutdown occurs at 90°C.
The EM-356C can optionally be equipped with an RS-485 Modbus interface. It enables external control, parameter adjustment, and monitoring from a host system or PLC.
Parameters can be configured digitally using the EM-236 Interface Unit. PC-based configuration is available using EmenTool Lite together with the EM-328 adapter cable.
Parameter settings are stored in the driver’s non-volatile memory. The interface can also be used to monitor motor current and RPM.
A version with a cooling fan is available for applications requiring higher continuous current. The maximum continuous current increases from 15 A to 20 A when the fan-cooled version is used at an ambient temperature of 40°C.
The device can be installed on a DIN-rail mounting base. Optional enclosure versions are available for different installation environments.
