Overview

EM-241C-48V is a full-bridge driver for brushed DC motors with nominal voltages of 24 V, 36 V or 48 V. It is designed for applications requiring bidirectional operation, controlled starts and stops, adjustable current limiting and application-specific control functions.

Separate FW and BW inputs command forward and reverse operation. The STOP input provides a controlled soft stop, while dedicated forward and reverse limit inputs can stop movement independently in each direction.

The C version adds configurable freewheel functions and a selectable PWM frequency. The 2 kHz setting provides the highest output-current capacity, while the 16 kHz setting provides quieter motor operation with reduced current capacity.

Direction and Stop Control

The FW and BW inputs start the motor in the forward or reverse direction. The STOP input brings the motor to a controlled stop using the selected deceleration ramp.

Separate Limit-FW and Limit-BW inputs can stop movement in the corresponding direction while allowing the motor to move away from the active limit in the opposite direction.

Two-Speed Operation

Two configurable speed settings are available. The second speed is activated through the Speed 2 input and can be used as an approach speed, positioning speed or alternative operating speed.

This function is particularly useful when rapid movement is required across most of the travel but a lower speed is preferred near an end position or target.

Analog Speed Control

The Speed 2 input can alternatively be configured as an analog speed-control input. The full-scale input voltage can be adjusted by parameter between 1 V and 5 V.

An input signal from zero to the selected full-scale voltage corresponds to a motor command from 0% to 100% PWM duty cycle.

External Current-Limit Control

The STOP input can alternatively be configured as an analog current-limit input. In this mode, a 0–5 V signal corresponds to a current-limit command from 0 A to 20 A.

This allows motor torque to be adjusted dynamically using a PLC analog output or another external control source.

Current Limiting

The adjustable current limit protects the motor and mechanical system against excessive current and torque during start-up, overload and jam conditions.

The current limit can also be used as a mechanical end-stop function when the mechanism is designed to stop against a physical limit.

Acceleration and Deceleration Ramps

Start and stop ramps can be adjusted independently between immediate response and five seconds. The ramps provide smooth acceleration and deceleration and reduce mechanical stress and current peaks.

Continuous and Impulse Control

In continuous mode, the motor runs for as long as the corresponding direction input remains active.

In impulse mode, a short control pulse starts the motor. The operating state remains active until another impulse changes it. Additional configurable functions include start kick and automatic reverse.

Selectable Input Logic

The digital inputs are divided into control inputs and limit inputs. The logic type of each group can be configured independently for NPN or PNP operation.

This allows the driver to be used with different sensors, switches, PLC outputs and control-system architectures.

Fault Input and Output

The FAULT terminal provides both input and output functions. During normal operation, the fault line is high. The driver pulls the line low during an overtemperature condition and, depending on the parameter settings, during a current-trip condition.

Pulling the FAULT line low externally stops the motor and prevents a new start. The fault terminals of several drivers can therefore be linked together to provide synchronized stopping.

Freewheel Functions

The C version includes configurable freewheel options. Freewheel switches off active motor drive and braking, allowing the motor rotor to turn freely.

The available freewheel behaviour can be selected through the controller parameters to suit the mechanical requirements of the application.

Selectable PWM Frequency

The 2 kHz PWM setting provides the highest available continuous and peak-current capacity.

The 16 kHz setting moves the switching frequency above the normal audible range and provides quieter motor operation. The available continuous and peak currents are lower at 16 kHz.

Configuration Options

Parameters can be configured using the EM-236 Interface Unit. PC-based configuration is available using an EmenTool Lite-compatible interface, and smartphone-based configuration is available using the EM-326 and EmenTool App.

Mounting Options

The compact driver can be installed directly using screw mounting. An optional DIN-rail mounting base is available for control-cabinet installations.

Typical Applications

The EM-241C-48V is suitable for linear actuators, valves, hatches, doors, positioning mechanisms, material-handling equipment and other brushed DC motor applications requiring bidirectional operation, limit inputs and adjustable motion control.
