Overview

EM-76 is a compact panel-mounted power controller for brushed DC motors. It is designed for motor loads up to approximately 100 W and operates from a 12–32 VDC supply.

The controller uses pulse-width modulation to provide efficient motor-speed control with low internal power loss. Motor output is adjusted using the potentiometer on the front panel, while the minimum output level can be set using a trimmer located behind the panel.

The EM-76 is installed through a 10 mm panel hole and secured with a nut, making it suitable for simple operator-panel and equipment-control applications.

PWM Motor Control

The EM-76 controls motor speed using a PWM output with a typical switching frequency of 21 kHz. The high switching frequency provides quiet motor operation and keeps the switching sound above the normal audible range.

The output can be adjusted from 0% to 99% of the supply voltage. The controller operates at an efficiency of more than 90%.

Speed and Initial-Level Adjustment

Motor output is adjusted using the front-panel potentiometer. This provides direct and convenient speed control for the operator.

A separate trimmer behind the panel sets the initial output level between 0% and 16%. This can be used to establish a minimum motor output when the front-panel control is turned up from its lowest position.

Output Capacity and Cooling

The maximum continuous output current depends on the installation and the resulting cooling conditions. The controller can supply up to 3 A when mounted on a plastic panel, 3.5 A in free air and 4 A when mounted on a suitable metal panel.

A metal mounting panel conducts heat away from the controller more effectively and therefore provides the highest specified output-current capacity.

Power-Supply Requirements

The controller should be powered from a filtered DC supply with less than 20% voltage ripple. A suitable fuse must be installed in the supply circuit.

If the supply cable is longer than five metres, an additional capacitor should be installed close to the controller. This helps reduce supply-voltage disturbances caused by cable inductance and motor-current switching.

Protection Functions

The motor output is protected against voltage spikes, overload and short circuit. The controller can also withstand reverse supply polarity when the recommended external fuse is used.

The external fuse protects the wiring and controller if a fault or incorrect supply connection causes excessive current.

Installation

The EM-76 is mounted through a 10 mm hole and secured to the panel using a nut. The front-panel potentiometer remains accessible to the operator, while the initial-level trimmer is located behind the panel.

EMC Performance

The controller has been EMC tested for industrial environments according to EN 50081-2 and EN 50082-2.

Typical Applications

The EM-76 is suitable for fans, pumps, conveyors, small machine drives, vehicle accessories and other brushed DC motor applications requiring simple panel-mounted speed adjustment.
