Overview

EM-M19 is an isolated signal-conditioning amplifier for potentiometers used in industrial automation and position-control applications. It supplies the potentiometer with a regulated 5 V reference and converts the wiper voltage into a standardized analog output signal.

Five output ranges are available, including 4–20 mA, unipolar voltage and bipolar voltage signals. The required output range is selected using DIL switches, while zero and gain adjustments allow the signal span to be matched to the application.

Potentiometer Interface

The EM-M19 provides a regulated 5 VDC supply for an external potentiometer. Potentiometers with a resistance between 1 and 47 kΩ can be used.

The potentiometer wiper signal is filtered and amplified before being converted into the selected output range. This allows a basic position potentiometer to be connected to PLCs, controllers and other industrial analog inputs.

Selectable Output Ranges

The output range is selected using DIL switches. Available ranges are:

  • 4–20 mA
  • 0–10 V
  • 0–5 V
  • −10 to +10 V
  • −5 to +5 V

The current output can drive load resistances from 0 to 500 Ω. The voltage outputs are intended for loads with an input resistance greater than 1 kΩ.

Zero and Gain Adjustment

The gain can be adjusted by ±30%. A separate zero adjustment is provided with a specified adjustment range of 50%.

These adjustments allow the mechanical travel of the potentiometer to be matched to the required analog output span. The zero adjustment also enables the unipolar potentiometer signal to be adapted for bipolar voltage-output applications.

Signal Filtering

The standard signal bandwidth extends from DC to 10 Hz, providing filtering for slowly changing position and control signals.

An optional version with a frequency range up to 1 kHz is available for applications requiring a faster response.

Isolation and Protection

The operating supply is galvanically isolated from the output-side signal circuit. The specified isolation voltage is 500 V.

The output stage is protected against short circuits, and the operating-voltage input is protected against incorrect polarity.
