Technical data requiring confirmation: The source specifies a switch-on range of 18–39 V, although the operating-voltage range is 33–65 V. Verify the correct switch-on range before publishing or using the device.
EM-A23-48V is a braking-load controller designed to absorb regenerated electrical energy in higher-voltage DC motor systems. When a motor decelerates, it can operate as a generator and return energy to the DC supply, causing the supply voltage to rise.
When the voltage exceeds the selected switch-on threshold, the EM-A23-48V connects the braking load across the DC supply. The regenerated energy is converted into heat, helping protect the motor controller and other connected equipment from excessive DC-bus voltage.
During rapid deceleration or when an external load drives the motor, energy can flow from the motor controller back into the DC supply. If the power source cannot absorb this energy, the DC-bus voltage increases.
The EM-A23-48V monitors the supply voltage and activates the braking load when the selected threshold is exceeded. This provides a controlled path for dissipating regenerated energy.
The switching threshold must be set above the highest normal supply voltage and below the overvoltage limit of the motor controller and other connected equipment.
The original technical data states an adjustable range of 18–39 V. This conflicts with the specified 33–65 V operating range and is therefore subject to confirmation before use.
The unit is specified for a 15 Ω braking load. At a DC-bus voltage of 50 V, the theoretical current through a 15 Ω resistor is approximately 3.33 A:
I = U / R = 50 V / 15 Ω ≈ 3.33 A
The corresponding instantaneous resistor power is approximately 167 W:
P = U² / R = 50² / 15 Ω ≈ 167 W
An onboard LED indicates when the braking load is active. During intermittent braking, the LED may switch on and off as the DC-bus voltage moves across the switching threshold and hysteresis range.
The EM-A23-48V includes overtemperature protection with a specified limit of 130 °C. The braking load can become hot during operation and must be installed with sufficient clearance from heat-sensitive and combustible materials.
