EM-282D is a high-current, full-bridge DC motor driver for permanent-magnet brushed DC motors. It is designed for applications requiring adjustable motion characteristics, bidirectional operation and advanced motor-protection functions.
Adjustable acceleration and deceleration ramps provide smooth starts, stops and direction changes. The adjustable motoring-current limit protects the motor and mechanical system against excessive current and torque, while a separate braking-current limit controls regenerative braking.
The FW and BW inputs start the motor in the forward and reverse directions. The STOP input stops the motor, while separate Limit-FW and Limit-BW inputs can be used with direction-specific end-limit switches.
Two adjustable speed settings are available. The SPEED-2 input activates the second preset speed or can be configured as a 0–4.5 V analog speed-control input.
In continuous control mode, the motor runs for as long as the corresponding direction command remains active. In impulse mode, a short command starts the motor and another command changes or stops the operating state.
The adjustable current limit protects the motor and mechanism during startup, overload or obstruction conditions. An analog current-limit input allows the permissible motor current to be controlled using a 0–5 V signal.
During the start ramp, the selected current limit is temporarily increased by 20% to provide additional starting torque. Separate braking-current limitation is available for controlling current generated during regenerative braking.
The driver supports selectable 2 kHz and 16 kHz PWM frequencies. The 2 kHz setting provides the highest current capability, while 16 kHz enables quieter motor operation. Available motor current is approximately 20% lower when operating at 16 kHz.
At a 48 V supply voltage, the available motor current is typically approximately 15% lower than the current values specified for 24 V operation.
The digital inputs are divided into command and limit groups. The logic of each group can be configured independently for NPN or PNP operation.
With NPN logic, an input is activated by connecting it to signal ground. With PNP logic, an input is activated by applying a positive control voltage.
The FAULT terminal functions as both an input and an output. It is internally pulled up to the supply voltage through a 100 kΩ resistor and is pulled low if an overtemperature condition occurs or, depending on the selected parameters, after a current trip.
Pulling the FAULT line low externally stops the motor and prevents a new start while the fault condition remains active. The fault terminals of multiple drivers can therefore be connected together to provide synchronized stopping.
The cooling-fan output switches on when the driver temperature reaches 55 °C and switches off when the temperature falls below 50 °C. The driver also includes a high-current brake output for controlling an external braking load.
The integrated two-wire RS-485 interface supports the Modbus RTU protocol. It enables remote control, parameter access and monitoring of driver status and operational values.
Parameters can be configured digitally using the EM-236 Interface Unit. Parameter settings can also be copied from one driver to another, simplifying the setup of systems containing multiple units.
The EM-236 can also be used to monitor driver operation and selected functional values during commissioning and diagnostics.
