EM-243C-JS1 is a high-current, full-bridge DC motor starter designed for joystick-controlled applications. It provides bidirectional motor control with adjustable acceleration and deceleration ramps, making it suitable for motion systems requiring smooth starts, stops and direction changes.
The adjustable current limit protects the motor and mechanical system against excessive current and torque. It can also be utilized as an electronic end-stop function. Separate speed ranges can be configured for forward and reverse operation.
The analog control input is optimized for joystick operation. When the calibration function is activated, the driver automatically detects the forward, reverse and neutral positions of the connected joystick.
The joystick can operate over a 0–5 V or 0–10 V input range. The 0–10 V range is selected using DIP switch 1.
Adjustable acceleration and deceleration ramps provide smooth motor operation and help reduce mechanical shock. The current limit protects the motor and mechanism during overload or obstruction conditions.
During startup, the current limit is temporarily increased by 50% to provide additional starting torque. The start-kick function can also help release a motor or actuator that is at risk of becoming jammed.
The driver supports selectable 2 kHz and 16 kHz PWM frequencies. The 2 kHz setting provides greater current capacity, while 16 kHz enables quieter motor operation with reduced current capability.
The FAULT terminal functions as both an input and an output. It is normally high and is pulled low if an overtemperature condition occurs or, depending on the selected parameters, after a current trip.
Pulling the FAULT line low externally stops the motor and prevents a new start while the fault condition remains active. The fault terminals of multiple drivers can therefore be linked to provide synchronized stopping.
The driver includes an NPN brake output for controlling an external magnetic brake or a braking resistor. A separate NPN fan output is available for controlling external cooling.
Parameters such as ramp times, speed ranges, current limit and input functions can be adjusted using compatible EM interface units. Operating status and selected functional values can also be monitored through these interfaces.
