Overview

EM-348-SAF is a four-quadrant positioning driver for brushed DC motors and actuators equipped with analog position feedback. It combines an analog position controller, adjustable motion parameters and a full-bridge power stage in one compact unit.

The power stage uses smooth-switching technology to reduce radio-frequency emissions. Two PWM frequencies are available: 2 kHz for higher current capability and 16 kHz for quieter motor operation.

Analog Position Control

The requested position is supplied to the SET input on pin 12. The actual motor or actuator position is measured through the FB input on pin 2.

Both position signals support selectable 0–5 V and 0–10 V ranges. The SET input has a 47 kΩ input resistance, while the feedback input has a 10 kΩ input resistance.

The driver compares the position command with the feedback signal and drives the motor in the required direction until the requested position is reached.

Motion Control and Protection

Adjustable acceleration and deceleration ramps provide smooth starts, stops and direction changes. The adjustable current limit protects the motor and mechanical system against excessive current and torque.

During startup, the maximum available current can rise to 30 A to provide additional torque for overcoming starting friction.

Four-Quadrant Power Stage

The full-bridge power stage supports forward and reverse motoring as well as controlled braking in both directions. This enables accurate approach to the requested position and controlled deceleration.

PWM Frequency Selection

At 2 kHz, the driver provides its highest continuous current capability. The 16 kHz setting enables quieter motor operation but reduces the available output current.

Brake Output

The NPN open-collector brake output can control an external magnetic brake or a braking resistor for managing energy generated during motor deceleration.

Multifunction Inputs

The controller platform includes two multifunction inputs. Depending on the installed firmware and parameter settings, these inputs can be assigned digital or analog functions.

Fault and Disable Functions

The PNP fault output provides an external indication of driver fault conditions. Applying a high signal to the disable input stops the driver and prevents motor operation while the signal remains active.

Modbus Communication

The integrated two-wire RS-485 interface supports the Modbus RTU protocol. It enables motor control, parameter adjustment and monitoring of driver status and operating values.

Several drivers can be connected to the same RS-485 network and controlled by one bus master.

Configuration and Firmware Updates

Parameters and operating values can be accessed through Modbus or directly with the EM-236 Interface Unit.

PC-based configuration and monitoring are available using the EM-328 interface and EmenTool Lite. Firmware updates can be installed using EmenTool.
