EM-185A is a compact panel-mounted speed controller for brushed DC motors. It uses pulse-width modulation to provide efficient motor control with a typical nominal supply voltage of 12–24 VDC.
Motor-voltage regulation compensates for changes in the supply voltage. Adjustable RxI load compensation helps reduce the effect of mechanical load changes on motor speed.
The motor-speed range and current limit can be adjusted using trimmer potentiometers. The controller is mounted through a 10 mm hole in an equipment or operator panel.
The EM-185A controls motor output using pulse-width modulation at a frequency of 25 kHz. The high switching frequency provides efficient and quiet motor operation.
The PWM power stage reduces internal power loss compared with linear voltage control and allows the controller to deliver up to 3 A continuously under the specified installation and temperature conditions.
The controller regulates the motor voltage against changes in the supply voltage. This helps maintain a stable commanded motor-voltage level when an unregulated supply or battery voltage varies.
The function regulates motor voltage rather than measuring actual rotational speed. Motor speed can therefore still change when the mechanical load varies.
Adjustable RxI compensation increases the motor voltage as motor current rises. This compensates for part of the voltage drop caused by motor winding resistance and helps reduce speed loss under increasing mechanical load.
The compensation can be adjusted to match the electrical characteristics of the motor and the requirements of the application.
The motor-speed range can be adjusted using a trimmer potentiometer. This allows the controller's usable adjustment range to be matched to the connected motor and mechanism.
The adjustable current limit protects the motor, controller and mechanical system against excessive current and torque.
The current limit can be adjusted from 0.5 A to 6 A. An external fuse must also be used to protect the supply wiring and controller during a short circuit or other severe fault.
The EM-185A is installed through a 10 mm hole in an assembly panel. This provides a compact installation suitable for machine panels, equipment enclosures and operator-control panels.
The controller is CE marked and has been EMC tested for industrial environments according to EN 50081-2 and EN 50082-2.
The EM-185A is suitable for fans, pumps, feeders, conveyors, laboratory equipment and other brushed DC motor applications requiring compact panel-mounted speed adjustment.
