Overview

EM-339A-PLI is a synchronized driver for two brushed DC motors or actuators. It uses quadrature pulse feedback from both actuators to monitor their speed, direction and relative position.

During movement, the controller continuously adjusts the individual motor speeds to keep the actuators synchronized. If the controller cannot compensate for the difference and the permitted synchronization error is exceeded, both motors are stopped to help prevent mechanical stress, twisting and damage.

Pulse Feedback and Synchronization

Each actuator must provide two pulse signals with a 0°/90° phase difference. The pulse signals can be generated by Hall sensors, reed switches or other compatible switching sensors.

The quadrature signals allow the driver to determine both movement and direction. Pulse inputs can be configured for either positive-going or negative-going signals.

The controller compares the pulse counts from both actuators and adjusts their speeds during movement. This compensates for differences in actuator speed, mechanical friction and loading.

Continuous and Impulse Control

The basic movement commands are FORWARD and BACKWARD. In continuous mode, the actuators move for as long as the selected command remains active.

In impulse mode, a short command starts the movement and a new command changes or stops the operating state.

Multifunction Inputs

INPUT-1 and INPUT-2 can be configured for several different functions, including:

  • Stop
  • Disable
  • Speed 2
  • Emergency stop
  • Forward or reverse end limit

Safety Switch and Safety Reverse

The controller supports a safety-switch input with line monitoring. This allows the electrical condition of the safety circuit to be monitored in addition to the switch state.

A configurable safety-reverse function can automatically reverse the actuators for a parameter-defined time after a safety event or obstruction is detected.

Reset and Homing

The RES/HOME input can be used to reset a fault. A longer activation starts the homing routine, which drives the actuator system to its reference position and resets or balances the internal pulse counters.

Current and Temperature Protection

The adjustable current limit protects the motors, actuators and mechanical system against excessive current, torque and force. The power stage also includes temperature protection with a 120 °C limit.

PWM Frequency Selection

The driver supports selectable 2 kHz and 16 kHz PWM frequencies. The 2 kHz setting provides the highest current capacity, while 16 kHz enables quieter motor operation with reduced current capability.

Fault and Brake Outputs

The FAULT and BRAKE outputs are configurable through parameters. The fault output can provide external status or fault indication, while the brake output can control a braking resistor or another compatible external load.

Modbus Communication

The integrated two-wire RS-485 interface supports the Modbus RTU protocol. It can be used for bus control, parameter access and monitoring. Modbus operation is described in a separate communication guide.

Configuration Options

Parameters can be configured using the EM-236 Interface Unit. PC-based configuration is available with EmenTool Lite and the EM-268 interface.

Parameter adjustment is also available using the EmenTool mobile application with a compatible smartphone interface.
