Overview

EM-339A-SPF is a dual actuator positioning controller designed to drive two DC actuators in parallel while maintaining synchronized movement. The controller uses pulse feedback from each actuator and continuously adjusts their driving speeds to compensate for differences in movement.

The SPF firmware version provides analog position setpoint control, allowing the actuators to be positioned according to a common set value. If synchronization cannot be maintained, the controller stops both motors to help prevent excessive mechanical stress and damage.

Synchronized Dual Actuator Control

The EM-339A-SPF controls two actuators using their individual pulse feedback signals. During movement, the controller compares the feedback information and adjusts actuator speeds to maintain synchronized operation.

If the difference between actuator movements exceeds the controller's ability to compensate, both motors are stopped. This helps reduce mechanical stress and the risk of damage caused by uneven actuator movement.

Analog Position Control – SPF Firmware

The SPF firmware uses an analog SET signal for position control. In this mode, the controller operates as a positioning servo controller, driving the actuators towards the position corresponding to the selected setpoint.

The analog setpoint range can be adjusted using parameters to suit the required positioning application.

Supported analog control signal ranges are 0–5 V, 0–10 V and 4–20 mA.

Pulse Feedback Inputs

The controller is designed for actuators equipped with pulse feedback signals. Feedback pulses can be generated by Hall sensors, reed switches or other suitable switching devices.

The feedback system supports pulse signals with a 0° and 90° phase relationship. The pulse inputs can be configured for either positive or negative pulse operation.

The maximum pulse input frequency is 700 Hz per input channel.

Safety Switch and Safety Reverse

The EM-339A-SPF supports a safety switch input with line monitoring, allowing the controller to monitor the safety switch circuit.

A configurable safety reverse time is also available. The reversing time can be adjusted using parameters to suit the application.

PWM Motor Control

The motor power stage uses pulse width modulation (PWM) for efficient motor control and reduced power losses.

The PWM frequency can be selected between 2 kHz and 16 kHz. The available continuous and intermittent motor current ratings depend on the selected PWM frequency.

Current Limit and Protection

The controller includes an adjustable motor current limit from 1 to 25 A.

The power stage is also protected by a temperature limit of 120°C.

In addition to current and temperature protection, the synchronization monitoring function stops motor operation if actuator movement cannot be kept within the controller's compensation capability.

RS-485 Modbus Communication

The EM-339A-SPF includes an RS-485 half-duplex Modbus interface for external control, parameter configuration and device monitoring.

Communication speeds of 9600 and 19200 bps are supported. Modbus communication and register definitions are described in separate documentation.

Configuration and Monitoring

Controller parameters can be adjusted using the EM-236A Interface Unit.

PC-based parameter configuration is also available using EmenTool Lite together with the EM-328 adapter.
