Overview

EM-167 is a compact positioning driver with an integrated setpoint potentiometer, servo amplifier and power stage for directly controlling a brushed DC motor. It is suitable for spindle-type actuators equipped with a position feedback potentiometer.

The driver is particularly suitable for slow- and medium-speed positioning systems with an end-to-end travel time of approximately 2–30 seconds. Its adjustable current limit can be used to restrict motor torque and protect the mechanism.

Positioning Operation

The required position is selected using the integrated setpoint potentiometer. The EM-167 compares the setpoint with the feedback signal and drives the motor toward the requested position.

As the feedback value approaches the setpoint, the driver reduces the motor speed. The motor stops when the setpoint and feedback values match.

Operating Range Adjustment

The positioning range can be limited from both ends using separate minimum and maximum adjustments. The lower end of the range can be adjusted between 0% and 30%, while the upper end can be adjusted between 70% and 100%.

Current Limiting and Fault Protection

The adjustable current limit restricts the motor torque. If the motor current remains at the selected limit for more than two seconds, the current-trip function shuts down the driver.

The driver also trips if the requested position is not reached within 30 seconds. When a trip occurs, the error output is activated. Operation can be restored by applying a control command in the opposite direction.

The power stage includes self-resetting overload and overcurrent protection. An external fuse is nevertheless recommended.

Installation and Applications

The small dimensions make the EM-167 easy to install. Its wide operating temperature range also makes it suitable for positioning applications in vehicles and mobile equipment.
