Overview

EM-259A is a PWM dimmer and power controller for 12–24 VDC systems. Its selectable PNP and NPN output modes allow it to be used with both positive-common and negative-common wiring arrangements.

The unit can control resistive and inductive loads as well as compatible LED lamps. Several selectable control curves allow the dimming characteristics to be adapted to the connected load.

PNP and NPN Output Modes

The output stage can operate either as a PNP pull-up output or an NPN pull-down output. This allows the EM-259A to be installed on either the positive or negative side of the load.

  • PNP pull-up: the controller supplies the positive voltage to the load
  • NPN pull-down: the controller connects the load to the negative supply

Load and LED Control

The controller is suitable for resistive and inductive DC loads. A dedicated adjustment curve is also available for compatible LED lamps, providing more suitable control characteristics for LED dimming.

The maximum output level can be adjusted from 50% to 100%. The bias adjustment sets the starting level between 0% and 50%.

Control Options

The galvanically isolated control input supports several standard control signals:

  • 0–5 V
  • 0–10 V
  • 0–24 V
  • 0–20 mA
  • 4–20 mA
  • 1–10 kΩ potentiometer

Input isolation simplifies connection to external automation systems. It also allows multiple EM-259A units to be controlled by the same control signal without directly connecting their power outputs together.

Configuration

Output mode, control range, and load-specific settings are selected using DIP switches located behind the removable side cover.

Overcurrent Protection

The output can supply a maximum current of 4 A. If the permitted current is exceeded, the self-resetting protection disconnects the output. Operation is restored automatically after the overload condition has been removed and the protection has recovered.

Installation and Cooling

The EM-259A is housed in a DIN-rail mountable enclosure. The heat sink is located on the side of the enclosure.

When the load current exceeds 3 A, leave at least 5 mm of free space beside the heat sink to provide sufficient airflow and cooling.
