Overview

EM-366A is a compact and efficient brushless DC motor driver designed for demanding automation and motion-control applications. The driver features Hall sensor feedback, true 4-quadrant operation, and RS-485 Modbus communication for flexible system integration.

Its high-efficiency MOSFET power stage supports 120° Hall commutation. Digital and analog control inputs, configurable parameters, and open- or closed-loop speed control make the driver adaptable to a wide range of applications.

High Efficiency and Regenerative Braking

The EM-366A uses a high-efficiency MOSFET power stage designed to meet modern EMC requirements. The unit supports 120° commutation and provides true 4-quadrant operation with regenerative braking.

During braking, the supply voltage rises and can be controlled using an external braking resistor. In battery-powered systems, the regenerated energy can be returned to the battery, eliminating the need for a braking resistor.

Control Features

The EM-366A includes digital command inputs for direction, start/stop, disable, and speed-2 selection. Analog inputs are provided for speed and current-limit control.

A fault indication output provides external status information. Several input and output functions can be modified using parameters.

Speed Control Modes

The EM-366A provides two selectable speed control modes:

  • Open loop: motor voltage follows the control voltage, providing operation similar to a conventional DC motor controller.
  • Closed loop: Hall sensor feedback is used to regulate motor speed, providing accurate speed control when the load changes.

Acceleration and Deceleration Ramps

Start and stop ramps operate in both speed control modes. Adjustable parameters allow the speed range, closed-loop RPM limits, acceleration ramp, and deceleration ramp to be adapted to the application.

Analog and PWM Control

Filtered analog inputs can be used for both speed and current-limit control. The analog input range can be selected from 0–5 V up to 0–10 V.

The 100 Hz input filtering also allows PWM signals to be used for speed and current-limit control.

Current Limit

The motor current limit can be set from 1 to 60 A in 1 A steps. An external 0–5 V analog signal can also be used for current-limit control.

Protection

The driver includes protection against overvoltage, undervoltage, and overtemperature.

  • Overvoltage shutdown: 60 V
  • Undervoltage shutdown: 10 V
  • Restart after undervoltage: 11 V
  • Overtemperature shutdown: 90°C

RS-485 Modbus Communication

The integrated RS-485 Modbus interface enables external control, parameter access, and integration with a host system or PLC.

Parameter Setting and Monitoring

Parameters can be configured digitally using the EM-236 Interface Unit. PC-based configuration is available using EmenTool Lite together with the EM-328 adapter cable.

Parameter settings are stored in the driver’s non-volatile memory. The interface also supports real-time monitoring of motor current and RPM.

Cooling Fan Control

A dedicated 12 V fan output is available for temperature-controlled cooling. The fan output switches on when the driver temperature rises above 55°C and switches off when the temperature falls below 50°C.

When fan cooling is used, the specified continuous current ratings are available at an ambient temperature of 50°C.

Installation and Options

The driver can be installed on a DIN-rail mounting base. Optional enclosure versions are available for different installation environments.
