Overview

EM-346A is a compact brushless DC motor driver with hall sensor feedback and an efficient MOSFET power stage. The driver supports 120° commutation and features a true 4-quadrant power stage, enabling regenerative braking.

During regenerative braking, energy from the motor causes the supply voltage to rise. This voltage rise can be controlled with an external braking resistor. In battery-powered applications, the braking energy can instead be returned to the battery, eliminating the need for a braking resistor.

Control Interfaces

The EM-346A provides digital command inputs for the main motor control functions:

  • Direction
  • Brake
  • Start / Stop
  • Disable
  • Speed-2 activation

Analog inputs are provided for speed and current control. A digitally presettable second speed (speed-2) can be activated through a digital command input. The filtered analog inputs can also be controlled using PWM signals.

NPN outputs are available for fault and overcurrent indication. Several input and output functions can be configured through parameters.

TTL-Level Modbus RTU

The EM-346A includes a TTL-level serial interface with Modbus RTU protocol for integration with external control systems. The interface provides a digital alternative to the conventional analog and digital control inputs and can be used for Modbus-based control and communication with the motor driver.

Note: The Modbus interface uses TTL-level signals. It is not an RS-485 interface and requires a suitable interface or level converter when connecting to an RS-485 Modbus network.

Protection and Reset Functions

The driver includes protection against overvoltage, undervoltage and overtemperature. Fault conditions are indicated by an on-board fault LED.

Overtemperature and current limit conditions can be reset using:

  • Reset input
  • Reset timer
  • Setting the analog speed command to zero

Speed Control Modes

Two speed control modes are available:

  • Open loop (direct control): motor voltage is proportional to the control voltage, similar to a standard DC motor.
  • Closed loop: hall sensor feedback is used for speed control, providing good speed regulation.

Start and stop ramps operate in both control modes. Speed adjustment range, closed-loop RPM range and ramp times can be configured through parameters.

Configuration and Monitoring

Settings can be configured digitally using the EM-236 Interface Unit or with EmenTool Lite PC software together with the EM-268 adapter cable.

Parameters are stored in the device's non-volatile memory. The interface can also be used to monitor motor current and RPM.

Installation

The EM-346A can be installed in a DIN-rail base, and enclosure options are available for different installation requirements.
