EM-346A is a compact brushless DC motor driver with Hall sensor feedback and an efficient MOSFET power stage. The driver supports 120° Hall commutation and features a true 4-quadrant power stage, enabling regenerative braking.
During regenerative braking, energy from the motor causes the supply voltage to rise. This voltage rise can be controlled using an external braking resistor. In battery-powered applications, the braking energy can instead be returned to the battery, eliminating the need for a braking resistor.
The EM-346A provides digital command inputs for the main motor control functions:
Analog inputs are provided for speed and current-limit control. A digitally presettable second speed, speed-2, can be activated using a digital command input.
NPN outputs are available for fault and overcurrent indication. Several input and output functions can be configured using parameters.
The true 4-quadrant power stage allows controlled operation and braking in both directions. When the motor decelerates, mechanical energy is converted back into electrical energy.
A suitable braking resistor can be connected to limit the resulting rise in supply voltage. When the driver is supplied from a rechargeable battery, the regenerated energy can be returned to the battery.
The EM-346A includes a TTL-level serial interface using the Modbus RTU protocol. It provides a digital alternative to conventional analog and digital command inputs and enables integration with external control systems.
Note: the Modbus connection uses TTL-level serial signals. It is not an RS-485 interface. A suitable interface adapter or level converter is required when connecting the EM-346A to an RS-485 Modbus network.
The driver includes protection against overvoltage, undervoltage, and overtemperature. Fault conditions are indicated by an on-board fault LED.
Overtemperature and current-limit conditions can be reset using:
The EM-346A provides two selectable speed control modes:
Start and stop ramps operate in both speed control modes. The speed adjustment range, closed-loop RPM range, and ramp times can be configured using parameters.
The analog inputs can be used for both speed and current-limit control. The input range can be selected from 0–5 V up to 0–10 V.
The analog inputs include a 100 Hz filter, allowing PWM signals to be used for speed and current-limit control.
The motor current limit can be set from 0.1 to 25 A in 0.1 A steps. An external 0–5 V analog signal can also be used for current-limit control, with 0–5 V corresponding to 0–25 A.
Parameters can be configured digitally using the EM-236 Interface Unit. PC-based configuration is available using EmenTool Lite together with the EM-268 adapter cable.
Parameter settings are stored in the driver’s non-volatile memory. The interface can also be used to monitor motor current and RPM.
The EM-346A can be installed on a DIN-rail mounting base. Enclosure options are also available for different installation requirements.
