EM-324-SPF is a compact positioning driver for brushed DC motors. Its solid-state power stage uses efficient MOSFET technology, providing a long service life compared with electromechanical relay-based control solutions.
Position feedback is provided by one- or two-channel pulse signals. Although one-channel feedback can be used, two-channel 0°/90° pulse feedback is recommended for more reliable and secure position monitoring.
The analog position command supports 0–5.5 V, 0–11 V and 4–20 mA signal ranges. The input can be freely scaled within the selected range. The maximum electrical positioning accuracy of the driver and feedback system is 0.2%.
Position feedback can be obtained using either one pulse channel or two pulse channels with a 0°/90° phase difference. The two-channel method is preferred because it provides more reliable position information and allows the driver to detect the direction of movement from the pulse sequence.
The pulse inputs support frequencies up to 800 Hz, with a pulse sampling interval of 0.2 ms.
The position command can be supplied as a 0–5.5 V, 0–11 V or 4–20 mA analog signal. The selected input range can be scaled to match the required movement range.
A 10 kΩ positioning potentiometer is recommended when a potentiometer is used to provide the position command. The maximum permitted potentiometer resistance is 22 kΩ.
The parameter set includes an automatic learn routine that helps determine the full mechanical movement range quickly and easily. The usable positioning range can then be restricted from both ends using software limit parameters.
Accumulating pulse-count errors can be corrected using a homing sequence. Homing can be triggered manually or configured to operate automatically.
Motor speed and current limits can be configured separately for the forward and reverse directions. Additional adjustment parameters include load compensation, positioning dead zone, acceleration and deceleration ramps, and a braking zone.
These settings allow the motion profile to be adapted to the mechanics of the application and help provide smooth direction changes, controlled braking and accurate final positioning.
The driver supports 2 kHz and 16 kHz PWM frequencies. The 2 kHz setting provides a continuous motor current of up to 4 A.
The 16 kHz setting moves the switching frequency above the normal audible range, providing quieter motor operation with a continuous current capacity of up to 3 A.
The adjustable current limit ranges from 0.1 A to 6 A. During motor start-up, the available current limit can temporarily reach 8 A.
The driver includes overtemperature protection with a 100 °C limit. An on-board LED indicates fault conditions using blinking codes.
Parameters and operating status can be configured and monitored using the EM-236 Interface Unit. Parameter settings can also be copied easily from one driver to other driver units.
Combiport, located at pin 13, can be used to provide a fault output. Alternatively, it can be configured as a position-reached output, an analog position signal output or a disable input.
When configured as an analog position output, the available signal ranges are 0–5 V and 0.5–4.5 V. A 0 V output indicates a fault condition.
The EM-324-SPF has a wide operating temperature range and has been CE tested for household and industrial EMC environments.
The same enclosure options available for the standard EM-324 driver card can also be used with the EM-324-SPF.
