EM-348-48V-PLI is a full-bridge driver for brushed DC motors. It is intended for applications requiring adjustable motion profiles, current limiting, two selectable speeds and pulse-count-based end-limit functions.
The forward and backward control inputs start the motor in the selected direction, while the stop input shuts the motor down. Adjustable acceleration and deceleration ramps provide smooth starts and stops. The adjustable current limit protects the motor against overcurrent and can also be used for mechanical end-stop detection.
The integrated pulse counter can be used to implement position-dependent end limits. The counter value is stored in non-volatile memory and retained when power is removed.
Separate FW and BW inputs command forward and reverse operation. The STOP input shuts the motor down. Two configurable speed settings are available, allowing the application to use different operating and approach speeds.
The two-speed function is particularly useful in positioning applications where rapid movement is required across most of the travel but a lower speed is preferred when approaching the target or an end position.
The PLI version includes a pulse counter that can be used for end-limit control. Pulses from an external sensor are counted to track movement and stop the motor at configured counter limits.
The pulse-counter value is retained in the driver's non-volatile memory when the supply voltage is switched off. This allows the stored position count to remain available after the device is powered up again.
In continuous mode, the motor runs for as long as the corresponding direction input remains active. Releasing the control input changes the operating state according to the configured stop function.
In impulse mode, a short control pulse starts the motor. The motor state remains active until another command changes it. Additional configurable functions include start kick and automatic reverse.
The digital inputs are divided into control inputs and limit inputs. The logic type of each group can be configured independently for NPN or PNP operation.
This allows the driver to be used with different sensors, programmable controllers and external control circuits without additional logic-conversion components.
The adjustable current limit protects the motor and power stage against excessive current. It can also be used to detect a mechanical end stop when the motor current rises after the mechanism reaches the end of its travel.
The standard version provides an adjustable current limit from 0.1 A to 25 A, with a maximum of 30 A during start-up. A lower-current 6 A version is also available.
The PWM frequency can be selected between 2 kHz and 16 kHz. The 2 kHz setting provides the highest available output-current capacity.
The 16 kHz setting moves the switching frequency above the normal audible range, providing quieter motor operation with reduced continuous and peak-current capacity.
The FAULT output indicates operating faults. It is normally low and is pulled high during an overtemperature condition and, depending on the parameter settings, during a current-trip condition.
The DISABLE input prevents motor operation while it is externally held high. The fault and disable connections of several driver units can be linked to provide synchronized shutdown of multiple motor drivers.
The brake output can be used to release an external electromagnetic brake. It can also control a suitably rated braking resistor during regenerative braking and overvoltage conditions.
The brake output is an NPN open-collector output rated for loads up to 55 V and 1.5 A.
The EM-348-48V-PLI includes a two-wire half-duplex RS-485 interface using the Modbus RTU protocol. The bus can be used to control motor speed and direction and to configure acceleration, deceleration and current-limit values.
Operating status monitoring and parameter setting are also available through the bus. Separate instructions are provided for the RS-485 and Modbus functions.
Parameters can be configured using the EM-236 Interface Unit. The EM-236 can also be used to monitor driver operation and selected operating values.
The compact driver can be installed directly using screw mounting. An optional DIN-rail mounting base is also available for control-cabinet installations.
