Overview

EM-282D-JS1 is a high-current, full-bridge DC motor driver designed for joystick-controlled motion systems. It provides bidirectional control of brushed DC motors with adjustable acceleration and deceleration ramps for smooth starts, stops and direction changes.

The adjustable current limit protects the motor and mechanical system against excessive current and torque. It can also be utilized as an electronic end-stop. Separate speed ranges can be configured for forward and reverse operation.

Joystick Control and Calibration

The analog control input is optimized for joystick operation. When the calibration function is activated, the driver automatically detects the forward, reverse and neutral positions of the connected joystick.

The joystick can operate over a 0–5 V or 0–10 V input range. The 0–10 V range is selected using DIP switch 1.

Current Limiting and Motion Control

Adjustable acceleration and deceleration ramps provide smooth motor operation and reduce mechanical shock. The current limit protects the motor and mechanism during overload or obstruction conditions.

During the start ramp, the selected current limit is temporarily increased by 20% to provide additional starting torque. The start-kick function can assist when starting under a heavy load or when the mechanism is at risk of becoming jammed.

PWM Frequency Selection

The driver supports selectable 2 kHz and 16 kHz PWM frequencies. The 2 kHz setting provides the highest current capacity, while 16 kHz enables quieter motor operation. Available motor current is approximately 20% lower when operating at 16 kHz.

At a 48 V supply voltage, the available motor current is approximately 15% lower than the current values specified for 24 V operation.

Input Logic and Limit Functions

The direction-specific limit inputs can be configured for either NPN or PNP logic. This allows the driver to be used with different types of switches, sensors and automation control systems.

Fault Handling and Synchronized Stop

The FAULT terminal functions as both an input and an output. It is normally held high by an internal pull-up resistor and is pulled low if an overtemperature condition occurs or, depending on the selected parameters, after a current trip.

Pulling the FAULT line low externally stops the motor and prevents a new start while the fault condition remains active. The fault terminals of multiple drivers can therefore be connected together to provide synchronized stopping.

Braking-Load Output

A high-current braking-load output is available on pin 16. It can be used to control an external braking load for managing energy generated during motor deceleration.

Modbus Communication

The integrated two-wire RS-485 interface supports the Modbus RTU protocol. It enables remote control of motor speed and direction as well as adjustment of ramp times and current limit. Operating values and driver status can also be monitored through the bus.

Configuration and Monitoring

Parameters can be configured using compatible EM interface units. The EM-236 Interface Unit provides direct parameter adjustment, while the EM-328 interface enables PC-based configuration and monitoring with EmenTool Lite.
