EM-348-PLI is a full-bridge DC motor driver designed for applications requiring advanced control functions, pulse counting and Modbus communication. It provides bidirectional control of brushed DC motors with adjustable acceleration and deceleration ramps for smooth starts, stops and direction changes.
The adjustable current limit protects the motor and mechanical system against excessive current and torque. It can also be utilized as an electronic end-stop. Two adjustable speed settings make the driver suitable for positioning and automation applications.
The FW and BW inputs start the motor in the forward and reverse directions. The STOP input stops the motor.
The SPEED-2 input activates a second preset speed. Alternatively, the same input can be configured for analog speed control using a 0–5 V signal.
In continuous mode, the motor runs for as long as the corresponding direction command remains active. In impulse mode, a short command starts the motor and another command changes or stops the operating state.
The integrated pulse counter can monitor motor or actuator movement and provide counter-based end-limit functionality. The counter value is stored in non-volatile memory and is retained when the supply voltage is switched off.
Adjustable acceleration and deceleration ramps provide smooth motor operation and reduce mechanical shock. The adjustable current limit protects the motor and mechanism during startup, overload or obstruction conditions.
During startup, the maximum available current can rise to 30 A to provide additional torque for overcoming starting friction.
The start-kick function provides additional starting effort in applications with high starting friction. Automatic reverse can change the motor direction according to the configured operating conditions.
The digital inputs can be configured for NPN or PNP control logic, allowing the driver to be used with different switches, sensors and automation controllers.
The fault output is normally inactive and becomes active-high if an overtemperature or, depending on the selected parameters, a current-trip condition occurs.
Applying a high signal to the disable input stops the driver and prevents a new start while the signal remains active. Where permitted by the wiring instructions, the fault and disable lines of several drivers can be interconnected to provide synchronized stopping.
The NPN brake output can be used to control an external magnetic brake or a braking resistor for managing regenerated energy during motor deceleration.
The integrated two-wire RS-485 interface supports the Modbus RTU protocol. It enables remote control of motor speed and direction as well as adjustment of acceleration, deceleration and current-limit settings.
Driver status, operating values and parameters can also be monitored or configured through the bus.
Parameters can be configured and operating values monitored using the EM-236 Interface Unit.
