Overview

EM-247C-JS1 is a high-current, full-bridge DC motor driver designed for joystick-controlled motion applications. It provides bidirectional control with adjustable acceleration and deceleration ramps for smooth starts, stops and direction changes.

The adjustable current limit protects the motor and mechanical system against excessive current and torque. It can also be utilized as an electronic end-stop. Separate speed ranges can be configured for forward and reverse operation.

Joystick Control and Calibration

The analog control input is optimized for joystick operation. When the calibration function is activated, the driver automatically detects the forward, reverse and neutral positions of the connected joystick.

The joystick can operate over a 0–5 V or 0–10 V input range. The 0–10 V range is selected using DIP switch 1.

Speed and Motion Adjustment

Separate speed ranges can be configured for forward and reverse operation. Adjustable acceleration and deceleration ramps provide controlled movement and reduce mechanical shock.

The start and stop ramps can be adjusted between 0 and 5 seconds.

Current Limiting

The adjustable current limit protects the motor and mechanism during startup, overload or obstruction conditions. It can also be utilized as an electronic end-stop by detecting an increased motor load at the end of movement.

During startup, the selected current limit is temporarily increased by 50% to provide additional starting torque.

PWM Frequency Selection

The 2 kHz PWM setting provides the highest continuous and peak current capability. The 16 kHz setting enables quieter motor operation but reduces the available output current.

Input Logic

The limit inputs can be configured for either NPN or PNP logic. This allows the driver to be used with different switches, sensors and automation control systems.

Start-Kick Function

The start-kick function provides additional starting effort when the mechanism is subjected to high starting friction or is at risk of becoming jammed.

Fault Handling and Synchronized Stop

The FAULT terminal functions as both an input and an output. It is normally high and is pulled low if an overtemperature or overcurrent condition occurs.

Pulling the FAULT line below 1 V externally stops the motor and prevents a new start while the signal remains active. Fault terminals from several compatible drivers can be connected together to provide synchronized stopping.

Brake and Fan Outputs

The driver includes a high-current NPN brake output for controlling a compatible external magnetic brake or braking load. A separate NPN fan output is available for controlling external cooling.

Configuration and Monitoring

Parameters such as joystick calibration, speed ranges, ramp times, current limit and input functions can be configured using compatible EM interface units.

Driver status and selected functional values can also be monitored through these interfaces during commissioning and diagnostics.
