EM-241C-JS1 is a full-bridge driver designed for joystick-controlled brushed DC motor applications. The joystick provides proportional control of motor direction and speed from a single analog input.
Automatic calibration detects the joystick's forward, reverse and centre positions. This allows the controller to adapt to the actual signal range of the connected joystick and establish a reliable neutral position.
Adjustable acceleration and deceleration ramps provide smooth starts, stops and direction changes. The adjustable current limit protects the motor and mechanical system and can also be used for end-stop detection.
The analog joystick input provides proportional forward and reverse motor control. Moving the joystick away from its centre position selects the direction and increases motor speed according to the joystick displacement.
The input supports a 0–5 V joystick signal as standard. A 0–10 V input range can be selected by setting DIP switch 2 to ON.
The automatic calibration function records the joystick's maximum forward position, maximum reverse position and midpoint.
Calibration compensates for differences between joystick signal ranges and allows the driver to use the available movement range efficiently. It also establishes the neutral region in which the motor remains stopped.
Two configurable speed settings are available. The forward and reverse speed ranges can be adjusted separately to match the movement requirements of the application.
Separate directional scaling is useful when the mechanism moves different loads or requires different maximum speeds in the two directions.
Start and stop ramps can be adjusted between immediate response and five seconds. The ramps provide smooth acceleration, deceleration and direction changes.
Ramp control reduces mechanical shock and helps limit sudden current peaks when the joystick command changes rapidly.
The adjustable current limit protects the motor and mechanical system against excessive current and torque during start-up, overload and jam conditions.
The current limit can also be used as an end-stop function when the mechanism is designed to stop against a physical limit.
The configurable start-kick function provides additional starting effort when the mechanism is at risk of sticking.
This function can help overcome static friction and release an actuator or mechanism that requires a higher initial torque than during normal movement.
Separate forward and reverse limit inputs prevent movement beyond the permitted travel range while still allowing the motor to move away from an active limit.
The limit-input logic can be configured for NPN or PNP operation to support different sensor and switch types.
The FAULT terminal provides both input and output functions. During normal operation, the fault line is high. The driver pulls the line low during an overtemperature condition and, depending on the parameter settings, during a current-trip condition.
Pulling the FAULT line low externally stops the motor and prevents a new start. The fault terminals of several drivers can therefore be linked together to provide synchronized stopping.
The adjustable overvoltage limit can be set between 15 V and 40 V. When the selected limit is reached, the driver switches the motor to freewheel operation.
If the voltage reaches 40 V, dynamic braking is activated by short-circuiting the motor terminals. This helps control voltage generated by the motor during deceleration or when driven by an external load.
The controller supports 2 kHz and 16 kHz PWM frequencies. The 2 kHz setting provides the highest continuous and peak-current capacity.
The 16 kHz setting moves the switching frequency above the normal audible range and provides quieter motor operation with reduced continuous and peak-current capacity.
Parameters can be configured using compatible Electromen interface units. The same interfaces can be used to monitor controller operation and selected operating values during commissioning and diagnostics.
The compact driver can be installed directly using screw mounting. An optional DIN-rail mounting base is available for control-cabinet installations.
The EM-241C-JS1 is suitable for lifting and handling equipment, adjustable work platforms, mobile machinery, valve and damper actuators, positioning mechanisms and other brushed DC motor applications requiring proportional joystick control.
