Overview

EM-247C is a high-current, full-bridge DC motor starter designed for applications requiring advanced motion control and protection functions. It provides bidirectional control of brushed DC motors with adjustable acceleration and deceleration ramps for smooth starts, stops and direction changes.

The adjustable current limit protects the motor and mechanical system against excessive current and torque. It can also be utilized as an electronic end-stop. Two adjustable speed settings make the driver particularly suitable for positioning and actuator applications.

Motor Control

The FW and BW inputs start the motor in the forward and reverse directions. The STOP input stops the motor, while separate Limit-FW and Limit-BW inputs can be used for direction-specific end-limit switches.

The SPEED-2 input activates a second preset speed. Alternatively, the same input can be configured for analog speed control using a voltage signal.

Continuous and Impulse Modes

In continuous control mode, the motor runs for as long as the corresponding direction input remains active. In impulse mode, a short command starts the motor and another command changes or stops the operating state.

Current Limiting

The adjustable current limit protects the motor and mechanism during overload or obstruction conditions. An analog current-limit signal can be connected through the configurable STOP input.

During the start ramp, the selected current limit is temporarily increased by 50% to provide additional starting torque.

PWM Frequency Selection

The driver supports selectable 2 kHz and 16 kHz PWM frequencies. The 2 kHz setting provides the highest current capacity, while 16 kHz enables quieter motor operation with reduced current capability.

Continuous operation at high motor currents may require forced-air cooling.

Input Logic

The control and limit inputs are divided into separate groups. The input logic of each group can be configured independently for NPN or PNP operation.

Fault Handling and Synchronized Stop

The FAULT terminal functions as both an input and an output. It is normally high and is pulled low if an overtemperature condition occurs or, depending on the selected parameters, after a current trip.

Pulling the FAULT line low externally stops the motor and prevents a new start while the fault condition remains active. The fault terminals of multiple drivers can therefore be linked to provide synchronized stopping.

Fan and Brake Outputs

The cooling-fan output switches on when the driver temperature reaches 55 °C and switches off when the temperature falls below 50 °C. A separate brake-load output is available for managing braking energy with an external load.

Configuration and Monitoring

Parameters are configured using the EM-236 Interface Unit. The same interface can also be used to monitor the operating status and selected functional values of the driver.
