Overview

EM-341 is a full-bridge DC motor starter designed for applications requiring advanced motion-control and protection functions. It provides bidirectional control of brushed DC motors with adjustable acceleration and deceleration ramps for smooth starts, stops and direction changes.

The adjustable current limit protects the motor and mechanical system against excessive current and torque. It can also be used as an electronic end-stop. Two independently adjustable speed settings make the driver suitable for actuator and positioning applications.

Motor Control

The FW and BW inputs start the motor in the forward and reverse directions. The STOP input stops the motor, while separate Limit-FW and Limit-BW inputs can be used for direction-specific end-limit switches.

The SPEED-2 input activates a second preset speed. Alternatively, the same input can be configured for analog speed control using a 0–5 V signal.

Continuous and Impulse Modes

In continuous control mode, the motor runs for as long as the corresponding direction input remains active. In impulse mode, a short command starts the motor and another command changes or stops the operating state.

Current Limiting

The adjustable current limit protects the motor and mechanism during startup, overload or obstruction conditions. The STOP input can alternatively be configured as a 0–5 V analog current-limit input.

During startup, the maximum available current can rise to 30 A to provide additional torque for overcoming starting friction.

Freewheel, Start-Kick and Automatic Reverse

Configurable freewheel options can release the motor rotor from active electrical braking, allowing the motor to rotate freely.

The start-kick function provides additional starting effort in demanding applications. Automatic reverse can be used to reverse the motor according to the configured operating conditions.

PWM Frequency Selection

The driver supports selectable 2 kHz and 16 kHz PWM frequencies. The 2 kHz setting provides the highest current capacity, while 16 kHz enables quieter motor operation with reduced current capability.

Input Logic

The digital inputs are divided into control and limit groups. Each group can be configured independently for NPN or PNP control logic.

Fault Handling and Synchronized Stop

The fault function indicates overtemperature and, depending on the selected parameters, current-trip conditions. Pulling the applicable fault or disable line low externally stops the motor and prevents a new start while the signal remains active.

Control lines from multiple drivers can be interconnected, where permitted by the wiring instructions, to provide synchronized stopping.

Brake Output

A high-current NPN open-collector brake output is available for controlling a compatible external braking device or load.

Configuration

Parameters can be adjusted directly using the EM-236 Interface Unit. PC-based configuration is available with EmenTool Lite and the EM-268 interface.

Mobile parameter adjustment is available using the EmenTool application and the EM-326 interface.
