Overview

EM-M14 is a passive current-loop isolator designed for galvanic isolation of industrial 4–20 mA signals. It operates directly from the current loop and does not require a separate power supply.

The input current is reproduced at the output with a nominal 1:1 transfer ratio. The module combines a low loop voltage drop with good linearity and can drive output loads up to 500 Ω.

Current-Loop Isolation

The EM-M14 transfers a current-loop signal across a galvanic isolation barrier. Its nominal operating range is 4–20 mA, while the specified extended current range is 0–25 mA.

The nominal input-to-output current ratio is 1:1, allowing the isolated signal to be connected to a standard current input without additional scaling.

Loop-Powered Operation

No separate supply voltage is required. The module obtains the power required for operation from the current-loop circuit.

The voltage drop across the isolator is less than 4 V at a loop current of 20 mA. This voltage drop must be included when calculating the available voltage for the transmitter, wiring and receiving load.

Current-to-Voltage Conversion

An integrated 100 Ω resistor can be used to convert the isolated output current into a voltage signal. With the resistor connected, a standard 4–20 mA signal produces a nominal voltage of:

  • 0.4 V at 4 mA
  • 2.0 V at 20 mA

Output Loading

The isolated current output supports load resistances from 0 to 500 Ω. The total current-loop voltage budget must be sufficient for the isolator, output load, wiring and other devices connected to the loop.

Loop-Powered Transmitters

The EM-M14 can also be used in applications requiring galvanic isolation of a loop-powered transmitter. The available loop voltage must be checked to ensure that both the transmitter and isolator receive sufficient operating voltage under all load conditions.

Protection

The module includes protection against incorrect connections, overvoltage and overcurrent conditions. This helps protect the isolator against common wiring errors and disturbances in industrial current-loop installations.
